Unless I’m mistaken, currently if you want bold or italic text plus a class, it’s not possible to do this directly without going through the “custom code” stage.
I’ve posted another suggestion for improvement.

Bold and italic tag in the tree

When editing a paragraph, you can use the bold and italic buttons. The bold and italic tags do not appear in the tree below the “Overview” panel paragraph.
