When I edit an image and then import that image into BSS (choosing to overwrite the existing image with the same name), it updates the pages on my computer but when I upload to the site, the image is not changed. The only thing that works is renaming it from filename.jpg to filename-1.jpg and the site automatically updates and the upload successfully changes the image to the updated image. Is this the only way it will work? I thought overwriting the existing image was supposed to update all pages using that image automatically.

The old images are still in your browser cache, to get around this turn on version assets in your export setting.
